THE IMPORTANCE OF BREASTFEEDING
Breast milk is the best food for infants as it is able to provide the energy and all the nutrients that are necessary during the first six months of life. Afterwards, from the second half of the first year of life, with the introduction of weaning, breast milk still continues to provide more than half of the infant’s nutritional needs and up to a third of the overall requirements in the second year of life. The World Health Organisation (WHO) therefore recommends exclusively breastfeeding for at least the first six months of life, and from the sixth month onwards, integration with supplements to breast milk that can be supplied up until two years of age and until still desired by mother and infant. If it is not possible to breastfeed or if breast milk is insufficient, formula milk can be used but only under medical advice.
